A Christmas Carol

Isango’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol – Ikrismas Kherol , the most enduring of all ghost stories enjoyed a sell out season at Londons Young Vic following its premiere at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town. This time Scrooge is a woman, the setting is today’s South Africa. These are exciting times with the rise of a new economic class. Others face harsh poverty while Scrooge is rich and successful, but she lives a lonely, loveless life. Three Ancestral Spirits come to visit. By the end she understands it is never too late to learn from the past, to change and live a meaningful and happy life. Together with The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo this production won the Whatsonstage Theatregoers Choice Award for Best Off-West end production.

‘From the bravura start, when we are transported into the clanging bowels of a mine, to the astonishing reworking of Scrooge into a mean businesswoman …this provocative repositioning of the Dickens classic into a meditation on the problems are breathtaking.’
