La Boheme

La Boheme, premiered in Cape Town in April 2012. The production is a unique partnership with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. The striking and brutal realities of the everyday life of the poor, their struggle for food, shelter and medicine is contained within some of the most glorious operatic music ever composed. Mimi’s death from Tuberculosis cannot but strike a chilling chord in our modern world. Puccini’s message is clear and unambiguous – her death is a crime – committed because of our lack of collective humanity. Isango’s version of this great work moved the setting from the garrets of Paris to the townships of South Africa. With the score played on marimbas and steel pans in a style similar to the company’s Olivier Award winning The Magic Flute – Impempe Yomlingo together with the world class voices and acting talent of the ensemble it is a vibrant and vital piece.
Following its Cape Town premiere, the production played at the Hackney Empire in London for four weeks to standing ovations and great critical acclaim.
